Amnesty International Aalborg

Amnesty International is a global movement of 2.8 million supporters, members and activists in more than 150 countries and territories who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone. This is done by mobilizing the public to put pressure on governments, armed political groups, companies and intergovernmental bodies.

By the start of 2010 AI had a total of 95,106 members and contributors in Denmark. The main secretariat is in Copenhagen but there are also centers in Åhus, Odense, Aalborg and Frøslev, which help local groups with the activity packs that local groups are encouraged to work with.

In Aalborg there are a few regular meetings. Otherwise work is done in specific groups such as group 144, which is trying to set-up cooperation with a local group in Zimbabwe, on the persecution of the Roma people in Europe.

Purpose

• To conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice  for those whose rights have been violated.

• Donors: Contributions, Subscriptions, Legacies, Lottery Fund, National Pools etc.
• Number of Employees: 42 permanent staff and approx. 70 trainees and volunteers. In Aalborg all are volunteers.
• The Danish Section’s contribution makes up 4% of the International Secretariat’s total budget of GBP 48.0 mill
  but in per capita contributions it is second in the world, after the netherlands.
