The Democratic Republic of the Congo struggles with poverty and health issues but the greatest obstacle for development is the fighting and brutal violence, that is far to common in some areas. The President, Joseph Kabila, resides mainly in the West by the Capital city, Kinshasa, along with the majority of his army. Thus, the East is lift somewhat lawless. The UN does have a peacekeeping operation there, but they have no mandate engage in combat and they simply tips toes around the different fighting groups. The militant groups fight over mineral mines and they abuse the civilians in horrid ways to stay afloat. Aid workers operate in these areas and it is a truly brave endeavor, to set up clinics and refugee camps here. Some even work with farmers but long-term solutions for ways to change this pattern demands security.
