It was created by the UNHCR and the Tanzanian government in 1996/1997 after an estimated 150,000 Congolese refugees from the eastern Sud-Kivu region of the DRC crossed the border, by crossing Lake Tanganyika, into the western region of Tanzania, escaping civil war. Until the riots and civil war like situation in Burundi began the population of the camp was actually reducing. But since over 110,000 Burundians arrived in Tanzania and were split between Nyarugusu (65,000) and two other camps: Nduta (55,000) and Mtendeli (19,000) (WOW).

Since 2008, FAO has been supporting value chain development for potato, maize, milk, passion fruit, cassava and pineapple, focusing on Burera, Gicumbi and Gisagara districts. All groups involved in these six value chains (19 cooperatives of 5 180 producers – of whom 2 640 women, 15 input suppliers, and 7 processors) are receiving assistance in accessing profitable markets, increasing their cash incomes from harvests and, above all, improving the nutritional status of their families.

Centeret har knap 800 asylansøgere fra 35 forskellige lande, der bor hhv. på centeret og i lejede boliger i Hanstholm, på det tidligere plejehjem i Vesløs og Thisted Nødberedskab. Til at varetage de opgaver, der er forbundet med at drive et asylcenter, er der ansat godt 90 medarbejdere. Det indbefatter både sundhedspersonale i vores sundhedsklinik, lærere, der varetager undervisning af både vores børn og voksne, pædagoger og medhjælpere til at drive vores børnehave, pedeller, administrativt personale, samt en stor gruppe netværksmedarbejdere.
