Violence in Rwanda

Violence has been a big problem in Rwanda. It still affects many although many are opposing the urge to violence. In fact, violence is a big part of the entire region. It has been so normal that many of those who are still violent do this from habit or because they just have not noticed how wrong it is. For instance, many believe that violence can work as a tool of discipline for both workers or even their own children. It is much more likely to create distrust and animosity.

Topics

  • Sexual violence or abuse: Sexual violence is also consistent: "According to Police statistics, in 2010, the Isange One Stop Centre treated 1,350 survivors of rape. Sixty five percent of these were children and youth, 15 percent were below the age of five and 95 percent were women and girls, while 23 percent of the total were girls between 16 and 20 years" (New Times).
  • Female Genital Mutilation: Many Muslims still excersice their outdated religious rithual of female genital mutilation. The Muslim community is relatively small in relatively small; so if some families are still committing this cruelty to their young girls it may go unnoticed.
  • Beating of a wife, husband, child or someone related: It is still practised and unacceptable! Many are too afriad to turn their spouse or parent in, for fear of reprisalias or fear of loosing a vital income and their home. Also the punishment is very harsh. So how can these victims be helped?
  • Random Violence: This is often caused by men drinking too much banana vine, yet, an underlying cause could be the untreated trauma inside most Rwandans, which is build-up over the years, as there is no outlet and because people do not talk about it.
  • Psychological violence: Many do not comprehend the harm of psychological and verbal violence. Treating each other with dignity and respect is essential for a good relationship, and it may othervise have unfortunate results a side from causeing terrible long-lived griefance.
  • Violence against prostitutes: These are women who have often been abused and who are so poor, that they see no other option than to let men abuse them. Yet, instead of pity, or plain assistance, men use and often abuse them and both men, women and children disrespect them.
