Education is important in eradicating poverty, creating health, increasing productivity. Historically, in Africa education had only been available in urban cities, which means that the rural youth had to drop out of school or travel a long way to get to school.
Airtel engages in the local communities in which they operate through education initiatives – it’s a part of their new brand. Want to empower people to liberate communities and give them freedom to take control over their lives.
airtel strives to through education reach and uplift the underprivileged in communities in which they operate. Focuses on education underprivileged children by adopting schools across Africa under their program “Our School” which is run in partnerships with the governments of those countries’ ministries of education.
They provide:
- Minor refurbishments to existing school buildings
- The following provisions to the adopted schools
- Uniforms; Scholastic material (books, pens, etc); Text books
- Furniture (Desks, chairs, etc.)
- Teaching and learning aids
- Broadband connection
They have just picked their first school in Rwanda and are currently working with the ministry of education to formalize the adoption of the school. The school is called “Ecole Primaire Nyirarukobwa” and is placed in the Bugesera District approximately 35 minutes’ drive from the capital Kigali which was built in 1979 by the ministry of education. It is owned by the government and has 10 teachers that a fully salaried and teach 771 students. After airtel visited the school is has had their roof, classroom walls, provision of water, repairs and netball area renovated – the first part of airtel’s initiative. Next step is the scholastic materials.
Bharti airtel Limited is the African operations of the airtel company which provides mobile communication services across 16 African nations, the latest one being Rwanda, and 4 countries in Asia. It has 150 million costumers in Asia and 50 million customers in Africa.
