AMERICAN REFUGEE COMMITTEE - ARC

ARC serve 55,000 Congolese refugees and manages all three major refugee camps in Rwanda, providing health care, water, construction, and sanitation services as well as programs combating gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS. ARC also manages successful income generation programs in the camps and hires and trains refugees wherever possible (ARC).

While Nyabiheke is the newest with refugees arriving between 2005 and 2008, Gihembe and Kiziba were established in 1996 and their population has stayed put since then. Basically any child in primary or secondary school – and there are over 15,000 – has only lived inside the camps (ARC).

All camp-based refugees receive food assistance, even though the standard of 2,100 kcal per day is not always met due to temporary shortages of some food items. Water supplies are variable. Indeed, while supplies are tight in Gihembe and Nyabiheke camps, where they range from 7-14 litres per person per day, in Kiziba residents get more than 20 litres per person per day (UNHCR 2013).
