Rubavu is one of the most beautiful places in Rwanda, by lake Kivu and close to natural parks and the DRC. Many refugees from DRC enters here and through the years the area has been affected by the turbulant relationship between fractions in the DRC and Rwanda. Most people in Rubavu support themselves through small scale agriculture and small businesses.

There are 18 sectors or Imirenge: Bugarama, Butare, Bweyeye, Gikundamvura, Gashonga, Giheke, Gihundwe, Gitambi, Kamembe, Muganza, Mururu, Nkanka, Nkombo, Nkungu, Nyakabuye, Nyakarenzo, Nzahaha, Rwimbogo.
Problems varies in the different areas from poverty, lack of jobs, lack of water and the occational influx of refugees from DRC.
